What if my first Erectile Dysfunction (ED) prescription is not working as expected?

If your first ED prescription is not working as expected, this is common. It does not necessarily mean the medication is wrong for you.

ED medications may take several attempts to work well. Your first dose or first few doses may not show how the medication will perform over time.

Clinical guidance suggests trying ED medication at least 4 to 8 separate times with sexual stimulation before deciding that the medication is not effective.

What should I check before deciding ED medication is not working?

Before deciding that your ED medication is not working, check that:

  • You have tried the medication on at least 4 to 8 separate occasions.

  • You are taking the medication at the correct time before sexual activity.

  • You are allowing enough time for the medication to start working.

  • Sexual stimulation is present.

  • You are not taking sildenafil shortly after a heavy or high-fat meal.

  • You are limiting alcohol, as alcohol can reduce erectile function and affect how well ED medication works.

  • You are following the dosing instructions provided by your MedExpress clinician.

Anxiety, stress, tiredness, alcohol, and lifestyle factors can all affect how well ED medication works.

What if I am still not seeing results after several attempts?

If you are still not seeing results after a fair trial, contact MedExpress clinical support through your patient account.

A MedExpress clinician can review your treatment and may consider:

  • Checking whether you are taking your ED medication correctly

  • Adjusting your dose, if appropriate

  • Switching you to a different ED medication

  • Switching you to a different format, such as daily treatment or on-demand treatment

  • Reviewing whether lifestyle factors may be affecting your results

  • Advising whether further medical support may be appropriate

Do not change your dose or combine ED medications unless a MedExpress clinician tells you to.
